Flinders Petrie

Flinders Petrie's surveys of Abydos (1902โ€“1903) provide the foundational topographic and stratigraphic context.

Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853โ€“1942) is widely regarded as the father of modern scientific Egyptology. His meticulous survey and recording methods transformed archaeological practice in Egypt.

Petrie conducted excavations at Abydos in 1902โ€“1903, producing two comprehensive volumes โ€” Abydos I and Abydos II โ€” which document the entire Abydos necropolis, the royal tombs of the Early Dynastic period, and the funerary temples of the New Kingdom including the context of the Osireion.

Both volumes are available in full through the Internet Archive and are essential reading for understanding the Osireion within the broader archaeological landscape of Abydos.
